The Town Car was available with various premium factory stereo systems over the years, including a single-disc base receiver, a once-optional 6-disc receiver that later became the standard model, and an optional Alpine system with a subwoofer and plate-mounted component speakers instead of the full-range models found in the base stereo. Later on, a DVD/navigation system appeared on the option sheet, and it was paired with a 9-speaker THX-certified sound package.
Replacing the old receiver with an aftermarket stereo means losing features like the satellite radio tuner and factory navigation system, which newer and better versions of both are available on a wide range of aftermarket stereos. Removing the Town Car’s radio is relatively uncomplicated, especially with the base stereo system. However, if your car has the THX system, there is a factory amp located in the trunk, and you’ll need to bypass it when installing new gear, which requires running new speaker wires from the radio to each speaker or installing a new amp. While this isn’t beyond the reach of the average DIY-er, it’s best left to someone with car audio installation experience. Consult a car audio professional if needed.

The base Town Car has full-range speakers mounted to a 6″x8″ opening in the front doors, while cars equipped with one of the optional stereo systems have component woofers and separate tweeters behind the door panels. The rear deck speakers are top-mounted underneath the one-piece deck liner, secured by 6mm screws, and relatively easy to replace once the liner is removed.
To access the rear deck speakers, you need to remove the bottom and back seat cushions, and we recommend having a helper to assist with getting them out and putting them back in. Old (but clean) sheets or towels should be used to protect the cushions while they’re out of the car. For new speakers, you can choose either 6×8’s or 5-1/4″ aftermarket speakers, although the latter requires adapter brackets (included with your purchase) to secure the new speakers. In some cases, particularly with earlier Town Cars, you may need to remove the factory foam basket to create the depth required for the new speaker.
2004 Lincoln Town Car Radio Replacement
Upper-end Town Cars have a subwoofer located between the rear deck speakers, but it’s a lot more challenging to work with. Replacing this bottom-mount sub requires removing both portions of the rear seat, the upper trunk headliner, and the polymer enclosure that houses the 8″ dual voice coil sub. Additionally, you need to re-drill the mounting screw holes to install the aftermarket sub in the factory enclosure. While the process isn’t difficult as a whole, the sheer number of tasks involved and the drilling makes it a pretty significant project. If you’re not comfortable with that much disassembly, it’s best to leave it to a car audio professional. If you decide to tackle it yourself, it’s good to have someone to assist with some of the bulkier jobs, such as seat removal. When drilling, remember to measure twice
